Howard Allen Cohen is a Martindale-Hubbell® AV rated Florida Board Certified Real Estate Lawyer who concentrates his practice in the area of commercial real estate, with emphasis on mortgage financing by institutional lenders (construction and other loans requiring custom produced documentation), development of planned unit developments, condominiums (including conversions to condominium), and other forms of cluster housing, construction contracting, and the acquisition and sale of both residential and commercial properties. He has extensive experience in leasing (both commercial and residential), title insurance, tax deferred exchanges, and resolving title defect claims. Howard represents parties in real property litigation, including access, easement, and quiet title disputes.

Howard’s practice also includes corporate and business law, creditor representation in insolvency matters, computer law, commercial litigation, and representation of non-United States persons in connection with investments in the United States. Howard graduated cum laude from Rutgers--The State University at New Brunswick, New Jersey, winning the Edward McNall Burns Prize for achieving the highest grade point average in the Political Science Department. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and as President of the Political Science Honor Fraternity (Pi Sigma Alpha). Howard graduated from the University of Chicago Law School and was appointed as a New Jersey Deputy Attorney General during 1973. In that capacity he represented the state in both criminal appeals and state grand jury investigation of official corruption before relocating to Florida. Mr. Cohen served as instructor of law at the University of Miami Law School during 1976-77 and has been engaged in the private practice of law ever since. Howard is an active member of the Construction Law and Real Property Law Committees of the Broward County Bar Association and the Construction Law Committee (and its Green Building Subcommittee) of the Real Property, Probate, and Trust Law Section of The Florida Bar.

Howard serves on the Board of Legal Specialization and Education (BLSE) of The Florida Bar. BLSE has general jurisdiction over all matters pertaining to the administration of the board certification plan of The Florida Bar, the continuing legal education requirement, and the basic skills course requirement under Bar rules. Previously, Howard served for six years on the Real Estate Certification Committee (chair during 2003-04), which deals with the evaluation and testing of Florida attorneys seeking recognition as Florida board certified real estate lawyers.
